OBJECTIVES

  1. Strengthening regional cooperation: Harmonize large carnivore monitoring procedures and increase transparency in data collection and interpretation, reducing uncertainties in the conservation of these species and their habitats.
  2. Managing coexistence conflicts: Address challenges related to human–large carnivore coexistence by improving participatory processes for innovative habitat management and reducing socio-cultural and environmental conflicts.
  3. Engaging local communities: Create community-level opportunities through the establishment of a network of “Living Labs” and the development of knowledge bases to tackle coexistence conflicts, promote cultural diversity, and restore green infrastructure and ecological corridors.

The project consortium includes ten partner institutions from eight countries: Italy, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Albania.

THE PROJECT

The planned activities include:

  • Development of strategies and action plans for innovative management of large carnivore habitats, enhancing coexistence with humans.
  • Cross-border cooperation agreements for large carnivore management and continuation of collaboration beyond the project duration.
  • Testing of new large carnivore monitoring techniques.
  • Pilot actions to reduce the impact on domestic animals.
  • Development of digital solutions and platforms for knowledge and data exchange, promoting citizen science initiatives related to large carnivore monitoring.
  • Creation of “Living Labs” with digital tools to foster community-based co-creation of knowledge and innovations.

The project focuses on natural areas such as the North-Eastern Alps, the Dinaric Alps, and the Pindus Mountains, which are home to over 4,000 wolves and bears and more than 200 lynx.
